Prevention of Diseases and Injuries 8th Unit 3
| Term | Definition |

| Injury | Any harm done to the body. |
| Communicable disease | Any disease that can be passed from person to person, animal, or object. |
| Prevention | Attempting to decrease the amount of risk involved before something happens. |
| Non-communicable diseases | Diseases that are not passed from person to person. |
| First aid | Emergency treatment for an injured person before medical help arrives. |
| Universal precautions | A set of precautions designed to prevent transmission of pathogens when providing first aid. |
| Germs | Pathogens that enter your body that could potentially cause harm. |
| Infection | A condition that occurs when a pathogen enters the body and starts to cause harm. |
| Disease | Any condition that interferes with the proper functioning of the body or mind. |
| Pathogens | Disease-causing organisms that are so small they can only be seen through a microscope. |
| Immune system | A combination of the body’s defenses that fight off pathogens and germs. |
| CPR | Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, performed on an unconscious individual in order to supply oxygen to the brain. |
| AED | Automated External Defibrillator |
| Common sense | Sound, practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence. |
| Unconscious | Not conscious; without awareness, sensation, or cognition. |
