| Health Continuum | Healthful behaviors that promote wellness are shown on a scale. |
| Risk behaviors | Behaviors that can harm your health |
| Health literacy | A person's ability to learn about health info. and services, and to use these resources to better your health |
| chronic disease | An ongoing condition or illness (ex. heart disease) |
| environment | physical surroundings, the people who make up your world and the culture you live in. |
| culture | collective beliefs, customs and behaviors of a group |
| mental/emotional health | your feelings and thoughts |
| pessimism | to always look at things negatively |
| optimism | to always look at things positively |
| abstinence | Deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behavior |
| prevention | taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse |
| health | a combination of physical, mental/emotional health and social well being |
| Health education | providing health information to help people make healthy decisions |
| Health disparities | differences in health outcomes between groups |
| peers | people of the same age who have similar interests |
| spiritual health | a deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life |
| wellness | an overall state of well-being |
| heredity | all traits that are biologically passed from parent to offspring |
| life style factors | personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives |
| 7 Health Behaviors | 1. get 8 hrs sleep, 2. eat breakfast, 3. eat nutritious foods, 4. be physically active 30-60 min daily, 5. maintain healthy weight, 6. don't smoke, 7. don't use alcohol or drugs |
