Definitions and concepts for the Unit on Nutrition

QuestionAnswer
Nutrition The process by which an animal or plant takes in and uses food.
Malnutrition Faulty or bad nutrition due to poor or unbalanced eating of nutrients.
Protein  Needed by the body for growth  Builds and repairs cells  Keeps your muscles, skin, hair, and nails healthy
Carbohydrates  The body’s main source of energy  Gives you lots of quick energy
Fats  Used to help the body store vitamins and build tissue to protect important organs
Minerals  Used by the body to build new cells and control important body processes
Vitamins  Are needed to help the body use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins  Helps body systems function
Water  Used to dissolve vitamins and bring nutrients to the cells in your body  Keeps your body temperature normal
Fiber  Part of any plant that can’t be digested  Not considered a nutrient because it does not provide energy to your body.
Calories  A unit of measure  Measures how much energy food gives to your body  A measure of how much energy is used when you do something active
Refusal Skills  Use your common sense or conscience. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t!  Say “No!”  Walk away  Tell a trusted adult  Get help
Privacy and Respect  Everyone has this basic right  No one can make you feel inferior  Keep a good attitude  Know your limits  Respect other’s privacy  Give respect to those who care for you
Balanced Diet  You must eat a variety of healthful foods  You must eat the right variety of foods  You must eat the right amounts of foods  A balanced diet includes foods from all food groups in the recommended amounts.
Food Labels  Helps you make wise choices  Shows information that tells what is in the product  Contains nutrition facts
Percentage Daily Value  Percentage Daily Value (%DV) tells how much of the product is provided per serving.
What is MY PLATE? My Plate is a way to talk about how much food a person should eat every day. It is a way to show visually how your plate should look at a meal.
What is a normal body temperature? 98.6 degrees F
You should eat a rainbow of foods. No one food has all the nutrients you need to stay healthy.
What are the parts of the Digestive System? Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines.
2/3 of your body is.... water located mostly in your cells and blood.
