Definitions and concepts for the Unit on Nutrition

Nutrition | The process by which an animal or plant takes in and uses food. |
Malnutrition | Faulty or bad nutrition due to poor or unbalanced eating of nutrients. |
Protein | Needed by the body for growth Builds and repairs cells Keeps your muscles, skin, hair, and nails healthy |
Carbohydrates | The body’s main source of energy Gives you lots of quick energy |
Fats | Used to help the body store vitamins and build tissue to protect important organs |
Minerals | Used by the body to build new cells and control important body processes |
Vitamins | Are needed to help the body use carbohydrates, fats, and proteins Helps body systems function |
Water | Used to dissolve vitamins and bring nutrients to the cells in your body Keeps your body temperature normal |
Fiber | Part of any plant that can’t be digested Not considered a nutrient because it does not provide energy to your body. |
Calories | A unit of measure Measures how much energy food gives to your body A measure of how much energy is used when you do something active |
