Prenatal Development

TermDefinition
Ovum A female cell or egg needed for reproduction
Uterus The organ in a woman's body in which a baby develops during pregnancy
Fallopian Tube A tube that connects the ovary to the uterus
Sperm Male cell needed for reproduction
Conception Fallopian tube, and penetrates and fertilizes an ovum
Prenatal Development The baby's development during a pregnancy
Zygote The fertilized human egg
Embryo The name for the developing baby from about the third week of pregnancy
Amniotic Fluid Liquid that surrounds and protects the developing baby in the uterus
Placenta The tissue that connects the developing
Umbilical Cord A long tube that connects the baby to the placenta and transmits oxygen and nourishment from the mother's blood to the baby
Fetus The stage of development that begins around the eighth or ninth week of pregnancy
