Health Class Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Drug Is a substance other than food that changes the structure or function of body or mood.
Over-The-Counter-Medicine Found on the counter of local pharmacies or grocery stores.
Drug Misuse Taking or using medicine in a way that is unhealthy or illegal.
Drug Abuse Intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthy or illegal.
Overdose Taking more of a drug than the body can tolerate.
Medicine Is a drug that prevents or cures an illness or eases it's symptoms.
Prescription Medicine A medicine that can be obtained legally only with a doctor's written permission.
Stimulant A drug that speeds up the body's function.
Amphetamines Strong stimulants that speed up the nervous system.
Depressants Drugs that slow down the body's function and reaction, including heart and breathing rates.
Legal Allowed by law.
Affect Causes changes or influences.
Club Drugs Drugs that are mostly found in nightclubs or all-night dance parties called raves.
Narcotics Drugs that get rid of pain and dull the senses.
Hallucinogens Drugs that distort moods, thoughts, and senses.
Inhalents The vapors of chemicals that are sniffed or inhaled to get "high".
Function To work or operate.
Drug-Free Zone 1,000 yard distance around a school where anyone caught with drugs can be arrested.
Drug Possesion When a person has or keeps illegal drugs.
Probation A set of time during which a person who has been arrested must check in regularly with a court officer.
Alternative Another way of thinking or acting.
Assertive Willing to stand up for yourself in a firm but positive way.
Steroids Human hormones, or are similar to hormones found in the body, used to make muscles grow bigger.
