What is the bony framework called? the skeleton
What holds the bones in your body together? ligaments
What is the place where the bones come together called? joints
What are the three main kind of freely movable joints in the body? the hinge joint, the ball-and-socket joint, and the pivot joint
Name two ball-and-socket joints. shoulders and hips because they allow you to move your arms and legs in many directions
Name a pivot joint. your head because you can move it from side to side
What is your spinal column? Also known as your backbone, the spinal column is your main support.
How many bones are in your spinal column? thirty-three small bones called vertebrae
What are vertebrae? small bones which join together by slightly movable joints that you can bend and twist
What is a vertebra? only one of the 33 bones in your backbone
What is another important job of the spinal column? It is a hollow tube that protects your spinal chord
What is the job of the spinal cord? It allows your body to feel and to move.
What is the job of your rib cage? The long thin bones called your rib cage protect your heart and lungs
What is the sternum? The long front bone of your rib cage that the ribs are attached
What is the clavicle? the long,slender bone that connects the sternum to the scapula ( shoulder blade)
Another name for the shoulder blade is called.... the scapula
What is the skull? twenty-two bones which shield you brain, ears, and eyes from damage
What is the cranium? eight flat bones that enclose your brain
What are your facial bones? These bones attach to the two upper jawbones.
What is the lower jawbone? This is the only bone that moves. This bone allows you to open and close your mouth.
How many bones are in your hand? 27 bones
What are metacarpals? 5 long hand bones found in the palm of your hand and connect the carpals to your fingers
What are phalanges? your finger bones
