Drugs and Drug abuse

Termimproper use of medication.
Drug Abuse illegal use of a drug; use of substances that should not enter the body.
Addiction a physical or psychological need for a drug.
Drug Classifications Narcotics, Stimulants, Depressants, Hallucinogens, and Inhalants
Narcotics Specific drugs obtainable only be prescription to relieve pain, are very addictive.
Morphine and Codeine prescription drugs used to treat pain
Heroin illegal drug made from Morphine- most commonly abused narcotic- potentially fatal.
Stimulants Substances that speed up the body's functions like hear rate, blood pressure, and is very addictive.
Caffeine drug found in cocoa, tea, and soft drinks.
Amphetamine drug that stimulates the central nervous system, is usually prescribed to hyperactive children.
Methamphetamine Similar to Amphetamine- prescribed for treating narcolepsy, parkinson's disease, obesity.
Cocaine Powerful, illegal stimulant- potentially fatal. (coke, dust, blow.snow,toot.)
Crack concentrated form of cocaine that can be smoked- effects are stronger than cocaine- potentially fatal.
Depressants (Sedatives) Substances that slow down the body's functions and reactions like heart rate, breathing, blood pressure.
Tranquilizers Prescribed to help reduce anxiety and relax muscles. ( Vallum, librium, Xanax.)
Barbiturates Powerful sedatives that produce a feeling of relaxation. (downers, Barbs, Yellow Jackets, Reds.)
Hypnotics powerful drugs that bring on sleep ( Quaaludes, Ludes, Sopor.)
Street Drugs drugs made or sold outside of the government regulations.
Marijuana Plant containing THC, smoked and affects the functioning of the brain and damages hearts/lungs- mod commonly used street drug- addictive. (Pot, Grass, Weed, Joint, herb.)
Hallucinogens Drugs that distort moods, thoughts and senses- often leads to misjudgment, which can result in death.
PCP Powerful and dangerous hallucinogen often produces strange, destructive behavior. (Special Dust)
LSD powerful hallucinogen that produces rapid mood swings, hallucinations, feeling of fear/terror. (Acid)
Inhalants Any substance whose fumes are sniffed and inhaled to produce a mind- altering sensation- fumes go directly to the brain and will damage not only the brain but also the liver, kidneys, and other vital organs- single use could mean sudden death.(hair spray)
Club Drugs drugs associated with night clubs, concerts, and raves.
Ecstasy a stimulant/hallucinogen pill- can cause permanent brain damage. ( E,X,XTC)
GHB A depressant powder/liquid- extremely dangerous when combined with alcohol or other drugs-results in sleep, coma, or death. (Liquid Ecstasy, Liquid X)
Rohypnol powerful sedative pill- causes sleepiness and possible blackouts (Date Rape,Drug.)
Ketamine anesthetic used by veterinarians for animals- causes hallucination- possible respiration failure. (special K)
Anabolic Steroids synthetic form of male growth hormone that causes muscles to bulk quickly- harmful affects are acne, mood swings, brain cancer, liver damage, nausea, shorter adult height when used by children/teens
