First Aid/CPR Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Shock | a failure of the cardiovascular system to keep an adequate supply of blood circulating to the vital organs of the body |
| Fracture | a break in a bone |
| Unconsciousness | a condition in which a person is not alert and aware of his or her surroundings |
| Concussion | a jarring injury to the brain, which affects normal brain function |
| Poison | any substance that causes injury, illnesses, or death when introduced to the body |
| Poison Control Center | a 24 hour hotline that provides emergency medical advice on treating poisoning victims |
| First Aid | immediate, temporary care to an injured person until professional medical care arrives |
| Universal Precautions | actions taken to prevent the spread of disease by treating all blood and other body fluids as if they contained pathogens |
| Chain of Survival | sequence of actions that maximize the victim's chances of survival |
| Defibrillator (AED) | a device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm |
| Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) | a life-saving procedure that combines rescue breathing with chest compresions |
| Laceration | a cut caused by a sharp object |
| Puncture | wound that is small but deep and caused by an object that pierces |
| Abrasion | a scrape on the skin from a hard surface |
| Avulsion | when tissue is partially or completely separated from the body |
| P.R.I.C.E. | Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation |
