First Aid/CPR Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Shock a failure of the cardiovascular system to keep an adequate supply of blood circulating to the vital organs of the body
Fracture a break in a bone
Unconsciousness a condition in which a person is not alert and aware of his or her surroundings
Concussion a jarring injury to the brain, which affects normal brain function
Poison any substance that causes injury, illnesses, or death when introduced to the body
Poison Control Center a 24 hour hotline that provides emergency medical advice on treating poisoning victims
First Aid immediate, temporary care to an injured person until professional medical care arrives
Universal Precautions actions taken to prevent the spread of disease by treating all blood and other body fluids as if they contained pathogens
Chain of Survival sequence of actions that maximize the victim's chances of survival
Defibrillator (AED) a device that delivers an electric shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) a life-saving procedure that combines rescue breathing with chest compresions
Laceration a cut caused by a sharp object
Puncture wound that is small but deep and caused by an object that pierces
Abrasion a scrape on the skin from a hard surface
Avulsion when tissue is partially or completely separated from the body
P.R.I.C.E. Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
