What are Germs? Small organisms that may cause disease. -Some are helpful, some are harmful
What is a disease? Any condition that interferes with the body or mind.
What is a communicable disease? Disease spread to a person from another person, animal, or object. EX: cold
What is a Pathogen? Harmful germs that cause disease
What are the three types of pathogens? Virus, Bacteria, and Fungi
What are some examples of viruses? chicken pox, colds, mono, rabies, pneumonia
What are some examples of bacteria? Lyme disease, pinkeye, strep throat
What are some examples of Fungi? athlete's foot, ringworm
How are pathogens spread? Direct contact with others, indirect contact with others, contact with animals, contaminated food/water, contact with someone else's blood or body fluid, sharing food or drink, charing a utensit, sharing a medication
What is the function of the immune system? It fights off pathogens.
What are the five main barriers? Tears, salia, skin, mucous membrane, stomach acid
What do tears do? They wash away pathogens.
What does saliva do? It destroys harmful organisms.
What does the skin do? Protects the body except when you have cuts.
Wat does the mucous membrane do? It traps pathogens.
What do stomach acids do? They destroy pathogens.
What are some ways you can prevent the spread of disease? Avoid contact with those who are sick, do not share utensils, wash hands often, keep hands away from eyes, nose, and mouth, tick checks, take precautions when handling, preparing, and storing food, clean up after yourself.
How can you prtect others? Stay home if you are sick, cover mouth or nose when coughing and sneezing, go to the doctor, follow directions for medicine EXACTLY
