Lesson Two

QuestionAnswer
What is Respiratory Distress? When someone is struggling to get air.
What do you say to someone when they are choking? 1. Tell them to keep coughing 2. Have someone call 911 3. Stay with them
Why should you tell someone to keep coughing? Because they may be able to cough the object up themselves.
Why call 9-1-1? Even if they are coughing and getting air, they may stop getting air. Or they may have damaged their airway trying to get the object up.
When someone stops coughing what is it called? Respiratory Arrest
What does respiratory arrest mean? When someone is not getting ANY air.
How do you gain expressed consent? 1. say your name 2. say you're trained 3. ask if you can help
How should you position yourself when you are getting ready to give back blows? Postition yourself to the side of them, with one foot up to thiers and your back leg behind them, so that you can catch them if they become unconscious.
What do you do when you are ready to give back blows and in the right postition? Place your arm across the front of their chest reaching fo rthe opposite shoulder. Send them over until their head is parallel with the floor or lower.
After the first step, what do you do when giving back blows? Place the heel of one hand between their shoulder blades, and give 5 back blows. Then stand them back up and stand behind them.
To give abdominal back blows what should you do? Find their belly button and place two fingers above it. Then place your fist where your fingers are with your thumb against their stomach. reach around with your other hand and give five abdominal thrusts into the diaphragm.
What are you doing when giving abdominal thrusts? You are pushing up on the diaphragm and forcing air out of the lungs to push the object out.
How long should you continue the 5 and 5 technique? until the object is forced out or the person becomes unconcious.
The word 'Respiratory' refers to what part of the body? The upper body, and lung area.
When caring for a conscious, choking person you give ____ & _____? 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts.
What muscle do you push on when caring for a conscious choking person & why? The Diaphram, and because it will push up and squeeze the air out of the lungs. Which will help get the object out.
