What is respiratory Emergency? Conscious choking
What is Respiratory Distress? When some one is struggling to get air.
What are the signs of choking? 1. Hands on throat 2. Coughing Forcefully
What are the first three things you do once you know someone is choking? 1. Tell them to keep coughing. 2. Have someone call 9-1-1. 3. Stay with them
Why do you tell them to keep coughing? They might be able to cough the object up on their own.
Why do you call 9-1-1? Even if they're still coughing they may quit coughing at some point. They may have damaged their airway from what they were choking on.
If someone stops coughing what is this called? Respiratory Arrest
If someone goes into Respiratory Arrest what do you do then? Begin life saving techniques
How do you gain expressed consent 1. Say your name 2. Say your trained 3. Ask if you can help
How do you position a person to brace them if the become unconcious and fall? 1. Position yourself to the side of them 2. One foot up next to theirs and your back leg behind them.
How do you start life saving techniques? 1. Place arm on front of chest reaching to opposite shoulder 2.Bend them over till their head is parallel to floor or lower
How many times do you hit the person on the back? Five times
How do you continue life saving techinques? 1. Place heel of one hand between shouldeer blades. 2. Give 5 back blows (You will hear a hollow sound when you are hitting the right spot.) 3. Stand up and place yourself behind them.
How to finish life saving techinques? 1. Find belly buttton and place two fingers above it. 2. Place fist where the two fingers are at with thumb against stomach. 3. Reach around with other hand and grab the fist. 4. Give five upper thrust diaphragm.
How many upper thrust do you perform on the person? Five
What is the diaphragm? Muscle located below lungs but above the stomach.
What to do if the object doesen't come out the first time you perform the above process? Continiue the 5 & 5 techinique until the object is removed. * 5 back blows and 5 upper thrusts.
What do you do if they become unconcious at any point? 1. Lock your arms under their shoulders. 2. Pull them towards your body 3. Support their body and head and lower them to the ground GENTLY.
