What are the two groups the government provides direct service to? VA- the veterans administration;IHS- Indian Healthcare services
What is the USDHHS? United States Department of Health and Human Services
What is the PHS? PHS is public health services; agencies for the good of everyone.
What is the VA? The VA is the Veteran's Administration; pays for Veteran's healthcare.
What is WIC? WIC is womens, infants, and children; provides nutrition to pregnant women and children under 5 years old who cannot afford necessities.
What is IHS? The IHS is Indian Health service; pays for Native American healthcare
What is an MCO? MCO means Managed Care Organization; way to curtail costs
What is an HMO? An HMO is a health maintenance organization; pays a fee for belonging to a group; people in HMO's do not pick their own doctors
What is a PPO? A PPO is a preferred provider organization; insurance that provides levels of coverage and increasing payment by patien
What is Medicare? Medicare is healthcare for those over 65
What is Medicaid? Medicaid is healthcare for poor people; run by state, name differs per state; Wisco's Medicaid is called Badgercare
What were some problems in the first nursing homes? They were just dumps for societal outcasts and condtions were terrible ie starvation, beatings, murder
How has OBRA 87 improved nursing homes? OBRA 87 set the standards to make sure the nursing home quality was decent.
What types of services are provided by PACE? PACE provides a variety of services to the elderly so they can continue to live in the communnity. They provide preventive, primary, acute, and long-term care.

Who does Mental health Services provide service for? They provide for children and elderly, alcoholics, drug abusers, and addicts.
What kind of clients does Shelter Care service? Shelter Care primarily serves those who are mentally or physically challenged.
