| Term | Definition |
| Visual Observation | notes of distinguishing features, positive attributes, and physical flaws or faults should be made while evaluating the animals in a class. These notes are used at a later time to aid in preparing reasons. |
| Class Placing & Pair Comparison | based on species standards and observed features of each animal, a class placing is determined and comparisons are created for each pair of animals. |
| Top Pair | first and second place animals. |
| Middle Pair | second and third place animals. |
| Bottom Pair | third and fourth place animals. |
| Reasons | an explanation of one’s rationale for a class placing, created based on criteria and observations identified in roles. |
| Length | should be thorough but brief, less than 2 minutes. |
| Accuracy | only true statements should be made regarding animals and comparisons; grants or criticisms are provided when necessary. |
| Presentations & Delivery | make eye contact with the judge, voice is clear and confident, given at a steady pace (avoid hesitation), correct grammar and terminology. |
