Term | Definition |
aerobic | describes physical activities that can be done for continuously for 20+ minutes in a target heart rate zone |
agility | ability to change direction quickly while maintaining balance |
balance | the ability to maintain one's equilibrium while being still or moving |
cardio-respiratory endurance | ability of the heart and lungs to distribute nutrients and oxygen during prolonged exercise |
cool down | a series of exercises, movements or activities that help the body recover after vigorous activity; help to increase flexibility and limit muscle cramping |
coordination | ability of two or more body parts to work together at the same time |
FITT Principle | a set of guidelines to use when setting up a training program |
flexibility | full range of motion at a joint |
frequency | how often a person exercises per week |
health-related components of fitness | flexibility, cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition |
intensity | how hard one works while exercising |
muscular endurance | ability to work muscles for a long period of time without tiring |
muscular strength | the amount of force a muscle can exert for a short period of time |
power | a combination of strength and speed |
reaction time | amount of time it takes to react (move) in response to a stimuli |
resting heart rate | the number of times that your heart beats per minute (bpm) while at rest; 60 - 80 bpm is normal |
spatial awareness | knowing where one is in relationship to objects, people or things in one's environment |
speed | ability to cover distance or perform a movement quickly |
target heart rate zone | the upper and lower limits the heart should be beating during exercise / activity in order to strengthen the heart; 145 - 185 bpm for most teens |
time | how long one exercises or plays an activity |
type | what exercise or activity one is performing |
warm up | a series of exercises, stretches or activities that prepare the body for more vigorous exercise/activity; lessens chance of injury |
