Improving the properties of plastics: Additives

A variety of materials can be added into the polymer powder prior to processing, this can used to Bulk, condition the materials particular additives give the materials anti-static propitiates make the material flame retardant or resistant to ultra violet light.
Fillers are used to..... reduce the bulk of the plastic. They are generally cheaper than plastics and so help reduce cost.Examples of filters include sawdust, wood flour, crushed quarts and limestone
Some ??????? can increase strength and hardness of the polymer by removing brittleness. Fillers
Flame retardants they are used to reduce the risk of Combustion. There main role is to create a chemical reaction once combustion has began, they release agents that will stifle the combustion. E.G. the foam used to fill the inside of cushions
Anti-static agents reduce the effects of..... static charges that could build up on a product.
Plasticiser They are added to improve the flow properties of plastics when moulded. They reduce the softening temperature and go some way to making the material less brittle.
Stabilisers Stabilisers used to reduce the effects of ultra violet light.e. by making the plastics more resistant to being broken down by sunlight.
