Commensal Interaction in which one species benefit from another without causing harm
Dermatophytosis Ringworm

Virulence Ability of a pathogen to infect the host
Mechanical vector Object that carries the micro-organism, but does NOT play a role in its develop
Biological vector Animate object acting as a intermediate host in which some development of the micro-organism occurs
Parantenic host An organism that the parasite can use during part of life-cycle, not is not essential to completion of life cycle
Intermediate host Host in which the parasite can undergo some stage(s) of development, but without sexual reproduction
Definitive host Primary host in which the parasite develops to adult stages
Fomite Contaminated inanimate object
Vector Animate object that transmits an micro-organism
Vertical transmission Transmission of infectious disease between mother and offspring
Horizontal transmission Transmission of infectious disease between individuals, usually same generation
Incubation period Time period from initial infection to display of clinical signs
Aseptic Free from living pathogenic micro-organisms
Nosocomial infection Infection acquired whilst hospitalised
Antiseptic Agent applied to living tissue to prevent growth of disease-causing micro-organisms
Endospore Dormant form of bacteria
Infection The presence of multiplying micro-organisms that are causing harm to local tissues
Contagion The spread of an infectious disease from one organism to another
Colonisation The presence of multiplying micro-organisms not yet causing harm
Isolation Physical segregation of an animal suspected of having or proved to have a contagious disease
Quarantine Segregation of animals of unknown disease status for a period prior to entry to a new premises/country
Barrier Nursing Precautions following when nursing an animal kept in isolation
Protective Isolation Precautions followed to protect highly susceptible patients from infection
Obligate aerobe Grow only in oxygen
Obligate anaerobe Grow only without oxygen
Facultative anaerobe Grow with/without oxygen
Disinfection Physical or chemical destruction of micro-organisms
Sterilisation Complete removal of all micro-organisms including bacterial spores
