| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sedative with no analgesia; Provides muscle relaxation; appetite simulant in cats; anti-seizure and behavioral medication | Benzodiazepines |
| Tranquilizer linked with paraphimosis in Stallions; no analgesia; anti-emetic for motion sickness in dogs; eases recovery from anesthetic event; vasodilation and muscle reaxation | Acepromazine |
| Alpha 2 adrenergic agonist used in dogs, cats, horses and some exotics; vasoconstriction initially --> increased BP --> ; bradycardia. Reversible with atipamezole NOT atropine. | Dexmedetomidine |
| Alpha 2 adrenergic agonist used in cattle and small ruminants (can be used in cats, dogs, swine, horses). Ruminants requires 1/10th dose of horses; reversed with Tolazoline in ruminants; Yohimbine in other species | Xylazine |
| Important use is to provide analgesia and some sedation is expected. Causes respiratory depression. Can be reversed by Naloxone | Opioids |
| Opioid and Tranquillizer combination to provide pain control, and sedation and immobilization | Neuroleptanalgesia |
| Reversal for Benzodiazepines (rarely needed as minimal effect on CV and respiration but occasionally Benzodiazepines may cause paradoxical dysphoria ) | Flumazenil |
| Anticholinergics used to prevent bradycardia, decrease secretions such as tears and saliva; decrease GI motility; Avoid in cattle and horses. NO analgesia. | Atropine and Glycopyrrolate |
| Calming agents used to reduce acute anxiety/stress for veterinary visits in cats and is an effective neuropathic pain medication in several species) | Gabapentin |
| Calming agent used to reduce anxiety and stress for veterinary visits and other situational stress-related events in dogs. NO analgesia. | Trazodone |
