Drugs in Nervous

Ch 4: Drugs used in Nervous System Disorders

TermDefinition
Acetylcholine Neurotransmitter for cholinergic sites; combines with nicotinic and muscarinic receptors
Acetylcholinesterase Enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine
Adrenergic Related to nerves that release norepinephrine or epinephrine, mimicking the "fight or flight" response
Analgesia Absence of pain
Anesthesia Loss of sensation, often induced by drugs to allow surgical procedures
Autonomic Nervous System Controls unconscious body activities (e.g., GI motility, heart rate)
Catalepsy Muscle rigidity and immobility
Catecholamine Group of neurotransmitters including epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine
Cholinergic Related to nerves that release acetylcholine
Effector Organ or cell that responds to a nerve impulse
Ganglionic Synapse Synapse between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons in the autonomic nervous system
Minimum Alveolar Concentration (MAC) Measure of inhalant anesthetic potency, preventing movement in 50% of patients
Muscarinic Receptors Cholinergic receptors found at postganglionic parasympathetic nerve endings and some sympathetic ones
Neuroleptanalgesia State of central nervous system depression and analgesia induced by an opioid and a tranquilizer
Nicotinic Receptors Cholinergic receptors found at all autonomic ganglia, adrenal medulla, and neuromuscular junction
Parasympathetic Nervous System Division of the autonomic nervous system that regulates energy-conserving activities
Parasympatholtic Drug that reduces parasympathetic nervous system activity; anticholinergic
Parasympathomimetic Drug that mimics parasympathetic nervous system activity; cholinergic
Precision Vaporizer Device that converts liquid inhalant anesthetic to a precise gas concentration
Sedative Drug that suppresses brain activity and awareness, often causing drowsiness
Sympathetic Nervous System Division of the autonomic nervous system that regulates energy-expending activities (fight-or-flight)
Sympatholytic Drug that disrupts/inhibits sympathetic nervous system activity; adrenergic blocking agent
Sympathomimetic Drug that mimics sympathetic nervous system activity; adrenergic agent
Tranquilizer Drug that calms a patient without excessive sedation, reducing anxiety
Vapor Pressure Measure of an inhalant anesthetic's tendency to evaporate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
