Ch 3: Practical Calculations

TermDefinition
Concentration of a Drug The amount of active drug per unit of volume or weight
Dilution The process of reducing the concentration of a substance in a solution
Dosage Form The physical form of the drug (e.g., tablet, liquid, capsule
Dosage Range The acceptable minimum and maximum dose of a drug (e.g., 2–5 mg/kg)
Equivalent Weight (For electrolytes) The molecular weight divided by the total positive valence
Milliequivalent 1/1000 of an equivalent; a unit used for electrolyte concentrations
Percent Concentration Parts of solute per 100 parts of solution (e.g., % w/v, % w/w, % v/v)
Quantity Sufficient "Add a quantity sufficient" to reach a desired volume
Regiman The complete course of drug administration (amount, frequency, duration, route)
Ratio Concentration Expresses the relationship of solute to solvent/solution (e.g., 1:32)
Solute The substance that is dissolved in a liquid (solution)
Solution A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
Solvet The liquid in which a solute is dissolved
Stock Solution A concentrated solution that is diluted to prepare working solutions
Dosage The amount of drug to be given per unit of body weight (e.g., mg/kg)
Dose The total amount of medication to be given at one time (e.g., 20 mg)
