Heparin Green top tube; prevents conversion of prothrombin to thrombin; interferes with staining of cells for a blood smear differential
EDTA Lavender or Purple top tube; EDTA binds Calcium; Ideal for hematology
Serum Red top tube; No anticoagulant; blood will clot and serum does NOT contain fibrinogen as is in the clot; blood chemistries, drug testing
Icterus hematocrit tube Serum or plasma will be yellow (liver disease)
Lipemia hematocrit tube Serum or plasma will be white/cloudy (fat - post prandial; possible pancreatitis)
