What hormones does the thyroid gland produce? Thyroxin (T4) & tri-iodothyronine (T3) Calcitonin
What does calcitonin do? Lowers blood calcium by decreasing osteoclast activity & rate of bone reabsorption
What are the functions of T4 & T3 Regulate O2 uptake by cells & metabolism, essential for normal growth
How many parathyroid glands are there? 4
What hormone does the parathyroid glands produce? Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
What is the function of PTH? Increases blood calcium levels
How does it increase blood calcium levels? Increases absorption of calcium from the GI system & reabsorbs calcium from bones
Where can these glands be found? Either side of the trachea
