CPR - guidelines, rhythms, terminology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| When were the RECOVER guidelines established? | 2012 |
| Name the 5 critical aspects of CPR. | - Preparedness & intervention - Basic life support - Advanced life support - Monitoring - Post CPR care |
| What heart rhythm is a warning sign of cardiac arrest? | Bradycardia |
| What is cardiac pump theory? | Stimulation of systolic phase of heartbeat to generate blood flow from direct pressure through the thoracic wall. |
| What is thoracic pump theory? | Compression over the widest aspect of the chest to generate blood flow from increased pressures during compressions which drives blood through heart chambers. |
| What is capnography? | A machine that measures CO2 concentration in inspired and expired gases and is the best indicator of chest compression efficacy. |
| CPR only provides how much cardiac output? | 25-30% |
| What is asystole? | Complete cessation of mechanical heart activity. |
| What is pulseless electrical activity? (PEA) | Indicated cessation of mechanical heart activity but continuation of electrical heart activity. |
| What is V-fib? | Indicated uncoordinated electrical activity, quivering, corrected with defibrillation. |
| What is a parasympathetic drug and what are examples of them. | - Reduce activity of parasympathetic nervous system. - Atropine, lidocaine. |
| What is a vasopressor and give an example. | - Drugs that increase peripheral vascular resistance. - Adrenaline, vasopressin. |
| When would you use sodium bicarbonate? | After CPR efforts have lasted over 10 minutes and in severe cases of metabolic acidosis. |
| What does ROSC stand for? | Return of spontaneous circulation. |
| What does PCA syndrome stand for? | Post-cardiac arrest syndrome |
| What are the symptoms of PCA syndrome? | - Multi-organ failure - Cardiogenic shock - Hypoxic / anoxic brain injury - pre-existing cond. that lead to CPR |
| Name some of the neurological support for PCA syndrome patients. | - Neuroprotectant; mannitol, hypertonic saline - 30-45% elevation - Permissive hypothermia |
| What is the monophasic dosing for defib? | 4-6J/kg |
| What is the biphasic dosing for defib? | 2-4J/kg |
