What do Kennel Clubs do? Maintain breed standards Record pedigrees in a breed registry Issue rules for confirmation dog show and trials Provide recognition of distinct dog breeds (though not all clubs in agreement)
Examples include the American Kennel Club (1884), The Kennel Club (UK), and the Canadian Kennel Club
Most breeders will attempt to have a low “__________” or COI, meaning they are trying to balance having predictable traits with genetic diversity. coefficient of inbreeding
Line breeding Mated pairs that are related but more distantly (cousins, grandparent/grandchild, etc…)
Inbreeding Closely related mated pairs (brother/sister, father/daughter, etc…)
Outcrossing breeding two non-related dogs
Cross bred or “designer” dogs Intentionally breeding two dogs of different breeds
