Janissaries Elite fighting force comprised of Christian slaves from the Balkans who were the trained to expand the Empire.
Safavid Empire Empire that expanded their territories by raiding and conquering neighboring regions using gunpowder weapons.
Shah Abbas Enslaved army composed of Christians from the Caucasus region.
Sunni Muslims Believe that anyone can be leaders in the Islamic faith. The Ottomans were this.
Shi'a Muslims Believe that only descendents of the Prophet Muhammed can be leaders in the Islamic faith. The Safavids were this.
Mughal Empire Empire that defeated Delhi Sultanate with Gunpowder weapons. Gained further power by tolerating the Hindu majority of their subjects
Safavid-Mughal Conflict Series of Wars fought over Middle Eastern land, religious tensions also played a rule as the Safavids were Shi'a and the Mughal's were Sunni.
Legitimizing Power Methods rulers use to establish their authority.
Consolidating Power Methods rulers use to transfer powers from other groups to themselves.
Bureaucracies Government system that includes dozens of officials who ensure laws are followed throughout a territory or empire.
Devshirme System System used to staff the Ottoman's government. Began with the capture of Christian boys from the Balkans, they would then be assimilated before the brightest were appointed to an office
Divine Right of Kings The belief that kings were the representatives of God. Helped legitimize rule.
Qing Dynasty Ethnically Manchu, would portray themselves in portraits with books to appeal to the Confucius-esque ideals of Hans Chinese people who were their subjects.

Palace of Versailles Built by Louis XIV, elaborate palace that showcased the wealth and power of the French monarchy.
