| What causes bloat? | -Many, but could be dog ate a large meal or a lot of water and then played -Gastric contents make the stomach more pendulous (hang down) there is room for the stomach to flip on its own axis causing nothing to enter or exit. |
| What are the symptoms of bloat? | Nonproductive retching. Discomfort/Pain |
| Why is bloat so dangerous? | Blood flow impaired. Gas and toxin accumulate causing stomach to “bloat” up like a basketball. Diaphragm and vessels get compressed. Shock and arrhythmia can develop. |
| What is the first step in treating bloat? | Pressure HAS to be relieved ASAP. A gastric tube is often attempted, as is a needle into the stomach. Then the patient will REQUIRE surgery to untwist the stomach |
| Why may a partial gastrectomy (removal of portion of stomach) be preformed on a dog that has experienced bloat? | When the stomach become twisted the blood flow to a portion of the stomach can be cut off causing that portion of the stomach to die (needs removal) |
