QuestionAnswer
What causes bloat? -Many, but could be dog ate a large meal or a lot of water and then played -Gastric contents make the stomach more pendulous (hang down) there is room for the stomach to flip on its own axis causing nothing to enter or exit.
What are the symptoms of bloat? Nonproductive retching. Discomfort/Pain
Why is bloat so dangerous? Blood flow impaired. Gas and toxin accumulate causing stomach to “bloat” up like a basketball. Diaphragm and vessels get compressed. Shock and arrhythmia can develop.
What is the first step in treating bloat? Pressure HAS to be relieved ASAP. A gastric tube is often attempted, as is a needle into the stomach. Then the patient will REQUIRE surgery to untwist the stomach
Why may a partial gastrectomy (removal of portion of stomach) be preformed on a dog that has experienced bloat? When the stomach become twisted the blood flow to a portion of the stomach can be cut off causing that portion of the stomach to die (needs removal)
Gastropexy Suturing of the stomach to the abdominal wall as a preventative
Dogs that experience bloat aren't at risk to bloat again T/F? False, dogs that experience this once are likely to experience again. No activity after eating or drinking!
