What is the first development in periodontal disease? Begins with development of plaque, a bacteria laden film that coats the teeth.
What does plaque build up turn into? Tartar
How long could it take for plaque to turn into tartar? Can be as quick a 12 hours
What is the hard substance that is formed when tartar calcifies called? Calculus
How can you intervene and prevent periodontal disease at home? - Brush teeth w/ pet safe toothpaste -Anit-plaque chews -And when needed prescription diets
How can you intervene and prevent periodontal disease at the vet? -Teeth get scaled, polished, and pits and grooves are removed under anesthesia -Teeth are inspected for decay and looseness
How many salivary glands do dogs have? 4
What is the purpose of saliva? - Enzymes help break down carbohydrates -Lubricates the passage of food
What is the esophagus? Muscular tube running from the pharynx to the stomach.
What is the esophagus lined with? It is lined with stratified squamous mucus epithelium
How are food boluses moved trough the esophagus and rest of the GI system? Peristalsis
What is the simple stomach? A large muscular sac that mixes food by peristalic contractions & holds for gradual release to small intestine
What is the stomach lined with? Inner surface has goblet cells (columnar) which produce mucus and cells which produce digestive enzymes
How does the stomach break down food? Food is chemically & mechanically broken down in the stomach.
What controls the entrance and exit of contents? Sphincters
How does the stomach digest proteins? -Denatures (breaks apart) with hydrochloric acid -Enzymatic digestion with pepsin
What is the estimated pH value of the stomach? pH of 2 (VERY acidic)
How does the stomach protect itself from the strong acids? Produces mucus to protect from acids (Without mucus develop ulcers)
Absorption of alcohol and (some) volatile fatty acids occurs in the stomach T/F? True
