Alimentary System AKA the Digestive System
What is Digestion? The process of converting food molecules into energy and other beneficial components, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream and distributed throughout the body to sustain health and productivity.
What are the accessory organs in the alimentary system? Liver Gall bladder Pancreas
Monogastric One simple stomach. Ex: Dog, cat, human, pig
Ruminants Large stomach divided into 4 compartments. Ex: Cow, sheep, goat, deer.
Hindgut fermenters One stomach, but hindgut serves fermentation function. Ex: horse, rabbit, guinea pig.
What is the muscular instrument that helps consume food and drinks? The tongue
What are papillae? They are taste receptors that cover the tongue (sharper in cats to aide in grooming).
What is the frenulum? The band of connective tissue that attaches the bottom of the tongue to our mouth
Masticating Used to gather, cut, and grind food (chewing)
Teeth differ based off diet T/F? True, depending on diet (herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore) teeth structure and placement varies.
Many herbivores teeth continuously grow, so how to they keep their teeth from over growing? Grinding action that is necessary to process their fibrous plant based diet has a wearing affect on teeth to keep them at bay.
Cats/Dogs have baby teeth which they lose and are replaced with permanent at a young age T/F? True.
Gingiva The periodontal mucous membrane that covers the bone of the upper & lower jaws.
Gingival sulcus-groove formed between the _____ of the tooth and the _____ of the gingiva Neck Free edge
Where do the crown and root meet? The neck of the tooth
What is the crown of the tooth covered in? (hardest substance found in the body) Enamel
What covers the root of the tooth? Cementum (thinner and less protective than enamel because this part of the tooth is more protected by the gingiva)
What is under the enamel and cementum? The dentin
What is in the center of the dentin? The pulp cavity- a canal filled with soft tissue, blood vessels and nerves
