| CNS | central nervous system |
| PNS | peripheral nervous system |
| nerves | bundles of axons convey messages between the CNS and other parts of the body |
| axon | conducts electrical impulses |
| neuron | a cell that receives, processes, and conducts electrical impulses from one part of the body to another |
| cell body or soma | carries the nucleus |
| dendrite | branches that receive information from receptors or incoming pulses |
| synapse | space between neurons that contains a chemical substance called a neurotransmitter, which helps impulses travel |
| myelin sheath | protective cover around a neuron |
| sensory neurons (afferent) | carry information to the brain and spinal cord |
| associative neuron (interneurons) | transmit information from sensory neurons to other neurons |
| motor neurons (efferent) | carry information from the CNS to muscle and glands |
| ascending pathway | a nerve pathway that goes upward from the spinal cord toward the brain carrying sensory information from the body to the brain |
| descending pathway | a nerve pathway that goes down the spinal cord and allows the brain to control movement of the body below the head |
