CNS central nervous system
PNS peripheral nervous system
nerves bundles of axons convey messages between the CNS and other parts of the body
axon conducts electrical impulses
neuron a cell that receives, processes, and conducts electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
cell body or soma carries the nucleus
dendrite branches that receive information from receptors or incoming pulses
synapse space between neurons that contains a chemical substance called a neurotransmitter, which helps impulses travel
myelin sheath protective cover around a neuron
sensory neurons (afferent) carry information to the brain and spinal cord
associative neuron (interneurons) transmit information from sensory neurons to other neurons
motor neurons (efferent) carry information from the CNS to muscle and glands
ascending pathway a nerve pathway that goes upward from the spinal cord toward the brain carrying sensory information from the body to the brain
descending pathway a nerve pathway that goes down the spinal cord and allows the brain to control movement of the body below the head
