Capillaries

QuestionAnswer
What can be palpated and used clinically as pulse points? provides strength and elasticity so can withstand forces of high blood pressure
What can be used for pulse determination in horses and cattle? Lateral and medial digital arteries found on both front and hind limbs.
What direction do veins move blood? TO the heart
Veins are just as strong as arteries T/F False veins are thinner and less muscular than arteries
Since the blood in veins are under less pressure, how do they keep blood flowing? there are intravenous unidirectional valves to keep blood flowing ONE way
What is the largest vein? Vena Cava (divided into cranial and caudal portions)
Are veins or arteries more commonly used for blood collection? Veins are freq. used for blood collection
What are the most common blood draw sites? Jugular vein, cephalic vein, medial saphenous vein, lateral saphenous vein, and femoral vein
Another word for blood draw Phlebotomy
When you see this card compare arteries and veins in your head, then flip to see the answers Arteries • Carry blood away from the heart • Have thicker, more muscular walls • Under more pressure than veins Veins • Carry blood back to the heart • Have thinner walls • Have unidirectional valves due to being under less pressure
What is the order from biggest to smallest when it comes to arteries? Aorta->Arteries->Arterioles->Capillaries
What is the order from biggest to smallest when it comes to veins? Vena cava->veins->venules->capillaries
Smallest and thinnest walled vessels. Capillaries
Capillaries are the critical connections b/w arterioles and venules T/F True
Why are capillaries so important? Very permeable to blood gasses and “leaky” making it the site for oxygen transfer keeping us alive. This also allows for plasma to seep out of bloodstream and percolate through the interstitium, eventually being absorbed by the lymphatic vessels
WHat type of membranes are full of capillaries? Mucous membranes are packed with capillaries – so on exam we always evaluate membrane color.
How is blood pressure measured and what is it measuring? Measured in mm of Hg (millimeters of mercury) Measuring arterial pressure
How is blood pressure written? Systolic/diastolic Systolic=pressure when the ventricles contract Diastolic=pressure when ventricles are relaxed
Normal BP for dogs and cats 120/80
Hypotension Low blood pressure
