Basic Terms

Axial central axis bones
Pectoral bones of the fore limbs

Orthopedist Doctor that deals with skeletal corrections, injuries, and disorders.
What are the basic functions of bones? Structure Protection – ex: rib cage, skull Minerals reserve – calcium and phosphorous Blood cell production – bone marrow
Bone Hard connective tissue that supports & protects organs
Cartilage Firm, flexible tissues that are not as hard as bone. Think noses & ears.
Ligaments Tissue that connects bone to bone
Tendons Tissue that connects bone to muscle
Joints Where bones meet and allows for movement
Long bones: found in extremities. Ex: Femur, tibia
Short bones: Found in joints, hands, & feet. Shaped like cubes/marshmallows!
Flat bones: found in skull sternum, & scapula
Irregular bones: vertebrae & pelvis
Sesamoid bones: Small tendon embedded bone found near joints, like the patella (knee cap).
What is the "diaphysis" of a long bone? shaft Composed of compact bone
what is the "epiphysis" of a long bone? Ends of the bone Composed mostly of spongy bone
what is the "metaphysis" of a long bone? Between diaphysis and epiphysis
What is bone marrow? A semi-soft gelatinous tissue
What is red bone marrow? Where blood cells are made Found in the spongy bone Highly Vascular Red bc of hemoglobin more red bone marrow the younger you are (at birth all is red)
