Physical Development

Terminology

TermDefinition
Overload For a physiologic component of fitness to improve, the system must work harder than it is used to working.
Specificity To realize maximum gains in the physiological system, activities and programs should be selected with the end goal in mind.
Individuality Exercise programs should be specifically designed for the individual because no two people have the same fitness goals, physical abilities, motivation, body composition or preliminary level of fitness.
Progression Starting gradually and adding a little each day in terms of repetitions of an exercise, speed, or endurance to increase performance.
Consistency Selecting a specific period of time for exercising each day helps make exercise a part of one's regular routine.
Warm up Prepares the body physiologically for exercise by increasing body temperature stretching ligaments and muscles and increasing flexibility.
Cool down Prevents pooling of the blood and enables the body to cool and return to a resting state.
SAID Principal Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands
Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands States that when the body is subjected to stresses and overloads of varying intensities, it will gradually adapt over time to overcome whatever demands are placed on it.
Work-out Activity A period of physical activity consisting of a warm-up, stretching, Cardio, Respiratory exercise, strength and or endurance activity and a cool down.
Exercise Tolerence Exercising at one's tolerance level should not result in prolonged fatigue, physical pain or discomfort.
What is physical fitness? The ability to carry out daily tasks and routine activity without undue fatigue.
Physical fitness involves various systems of the body and are dependant on the individuals? Overall health Ability to function effectively. Ability to engage in activities of daily living. Ability to engage in recreational pursuits and leisure activities. Are performed without unreasonable fatigue.
