Key Terms

QuestionAnswer
Define Kilovoltage (KV) Controls the penetrating power of the x-ray beam. The higher the KV, the more powerful the beam will be. When KV is increased electrons move faster causing more energy to be released as x-ray photons.
Define Milliamperage (MA) The current that heats the filament in the cathode of the x-ray machine. By increasing the temperature of the filament the number of electrons will increase and as a result so will the number of x-rays.
Define Film Focal Distance (FFD) The distance between the target and the surface of the x-ray film. The distance between the focal spot and the film affects the quantity of x-rays reaching the film. The greater the distance, the more the beam spreads out and fewer x-rays reach the film.
Define Latitude Describes the range of exposures that will ensure a diagnostic image is possible. If a film has wide latitude there is a greater range of exposure factors that will produce a diagnostic image.
Define Density Describes the amount of blackening seen on a radiographic film. This degree of blackening is related to the specific gravity and the atomic number of the subject under examination.
Define Contrast The difference in density (the degree of blackening between two adjacent structures). Lots of grey = low contrast image. Lots of black and white= high contrast image.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
