| anterior | the front of the animal |
| posterior | the rear of the animal |
| rostral | in the front of the face, closest to the nose |
| cranial | toward the head |
| caudal | toward the tail |
| dorsal | along the back, uppermost surface |
| ventral | along the belly, undermost surface |
| proximal | part of the limb closest to the body |
| distal | part of the limb furthest from the body |
| plantar | related to the sole of the foot |
| palmar | related to the palm of the hand |
| volar | related to both the sole and the palm |
| recumbent | lying down |
| sternal recumbency | lying on the chest |
| dorsal recumbency | lying on the back |
| buccal | toward the cheek |
| lingual | pertaining to the tongue |
| labial | pertaining to the lips |
| palatal | pertaining to roof of mouth |
| cervical | pertaining to the neck |
| sacral | pertaining to the pelvis |
| coccygeal | pertaining to the tail bone |
| medial | toward the middle |
| lateral | toward the side |
| abduction | away from center |
| adduction | toward center |
| superficial | near the surface |
