Grass characteristics and growth
| Term | Definition |

| Botanical composition | The range of grasses, plants and other vegetation present |
| Ley | Field or pasture sown by the farmer. Used for grazing. Temporary and reseeded often. |
| Palatability | How pleasant the grass is to taste. |
| Productivity | A measure of the quality of the plant material produced by the grass |
| Digestibility | The amount of food that can actually be used by body in comparison to the amount of food that was consumed. |
| Dry matter (DM) | amount of matter left in a food sample after the water has been removed. |
| Dry matter digestibility (DMD) | amount of dry matter that can be digested by the animal |
| Dry matter intake (DMI) | the amount of dry feed an animal takes in excluding its water content |
| Heading date | time when the ear emerges on the grass plant |
| Stocking rate | the number of animals that can be stocked in a set area of land |
| Production levels | the amount of herbage produced by the pasture |
| Permanent grassland | grassland that has never been ploughed |
