Clinical chemistries (BUN,LIP,AMYL etc.)

QuestionAnswer
Kidney Assays: BUN,CREA, Uric acid, Specific gravity.
Measures kidneys ability to remove nitrogenous waste. 75% of kidney is not functioning to be elevated. BUN * serum preferred
used to evaluate renal function CREA *Serum or Plasma used
Less useful in mammals. more meaningful in Dalmatians. Birds= produced in liver, secreted in kidneys. Uric acid
Tests the ability of the kidneys to concentrate or dilute urine. Specific gravity
Pancreas assays: AMYL, LIP, TLI,GLU, Fructosamine.
Increase is caused by pancreatitis or obstruction of the pancreatic ducts. AMYL
More sensitive test. Detects pancreatitis only produced by the pancreas. LIP
Tests the breakdown of protein. Use feces for this test. TLI
Indicaion of carbohydrate metabolism. Measures the amount of insulin produced. increase=caused by Diabetes. GLU
send to an outside lab. Increase=indicates persistent hyperglycemia. indication of average serum glucose over 1-2 weeks. Fructosamine
Other endocrine system assays: ACTH stimulation test, Dexamethasone suppression.
