Arms Control Basics

| Security dilemma | Basic term of security analysis. Because of uncertainty, governments cannot know with precision whether other actors in the international system are hostile or friendly. |

| Enforcement | Measures from clarification and diplomacy to sanctions and, ultimately, the use of force to bring parties in violation of their undertakings back into good standing |
| Treaty review | Periodic gatherings of parties to a treaty to assess effectiveness of the treaty in achieving its goals and compliance by its membership and to agree on measures to strengthen the treaty, improve its effectiveness and enhance compliance |

| Weapon system | The combination of the essential parts which make an item to a weapon. For example the tank, its cannon, and the munition. |
| Export control | Measures by states, international organizations, and private economic actors to prevent the illegal transfer of weapons, materials , equipment and technology that could be used to produce prohibited weapons |
