Safe and accurate Medication Admin

TermDefinition
Six Rights of Medication Administration The Right Drug, Right Dose, The Right Route and Form, Right Time, Right Patient, Right Documentation.
Generic Drug Name The official name of a drug. A drug can have only have one generic name.
Trade Drug Name Manufacturer name of a generic drug. Example: Ibuprofen (Generic Name) trade name: Advil
Dosage Strength an amount of drug in a specific unit of measurement.
National Drug Code Number(NDC) Drug unique identification number
Tall Man Letters Letters used to highlight the primary dissimilarities to similarly named drugs EX: PredniSONE and PrednisLONE
Body Surface Area(BSA) estimated total skin area of a person measured in meters squared.
Unit Dose Can be in the form of tablets, capsules or liquid medication dosages sealed in an individual package.
Multi dose When more than one dose in contained in a package.
Scored tablets Have a groove so they can be broken in half easily.
Enteric-coated tablets Meant do be disolved in the intestines rather than the stomach so should not be chewed or crushed.
Capsule A gelatin case containing powder, liquid, or granules. Can be broken and contents put into liquid or foods.
Sustained, extended, delated or controlled released tabs/capsules Are medications that are release a controlled amount of medication into the body over a period of time. THESE DRUGS SHOULD NOT BE OPENDED CHEWED OR CRUSED.
Time Critical Drug Administration Scheduled medications that if not administered more than 30 minutes prior to or after recommended dose time may cause harm ex: insulin, antibiotics, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, and pain medications.
Non time critical Drug Administration Scheduled medications in which longer or shorter time window since prior dose does not significantly change drug therapeutic effect.
