| Geriatrics | Branch of medicine that deals with the problems and diseases of old age and aging people |
| Hospice | Facility or program designed to provide a caring environment to meet the physical and emotional needs of the terminally ill |
| Incontinence | Involuntary urination or defecation |
| Hirsutism | Abnormally excessive hair growth associated with Cushing disease in horses and ponies |
| Bereavement | State of sadness, grief, and mourning after the loss of a loved one |
| Grief Process | The emotional process that one experiences when anticipating or following the loss of an object of attachment |
| Compassion | The quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanted to do something about it |
| Euthanasia | Greek for "good sleep"; method of intentionally ending a life to relieve suffering |
| Denial | Normal defense that saves to buffer an individual from some unbearable news or shock |
| Bargaining | Stage of grief experienced as conscious or unconscious attempts to control the situation or refute the loss |
| Anger | Stage of grief during which anger is the primary emotion expressed directly, indirectly, and specifically or generally |
| Depression | Actual grief; sorrow |
| Resolution | Stage during which there is no longer anger or depression, but acceptance |
| Catharsis | The release of pent-up emotions with resulting alleviation of symptoms |
| Validation | Process of understanding and expressing acceptance of another person's emotional state |
| Barbiturates | Nervous system depressants used to induce sleep, and in high doses, as anesthetics and euthanasia agents |
