OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Administration; provides job safety and health protection for vet practice employees
OSHA and Safety Regulations: keep location clean and dry, access to clearly marked exits, gas cylinders are properly marked and stored, provide PPE, toilet facilities and clean water, maintain fire extinguishers, information regarding potential hazards
Maintenance of Practice: keep a clean working environment (walk dogs outside, scoop litter boxes when soiled, etc.)
Zoonosis: disease transmitted from animals to humans (rabies, ringworm, hookworms, pin worms, tuberculosis)
Safety while at work includes: dogs should be on a leash, cats should be in a carrier, tranquilize animal if needed, use caution w/ electrical equipment, be aware of needles, sharps, etc.
Preventing injuries: YOU restrain animals, not their owners; lift animals using your legs, NOT your back
Injured on the job? You are covered by workers compensation insurance, which is paid by the employer.
Controlling infection: Prevent the spread of disease by isolating sick animals, caring for healthy animals FIRST, washing hands and changing scrubs after working with the sick animals.
MSDS: Material Safety Data Sheet; tells us precautions needed and first aid required in case of exposure/spill; kept in a binder organized alphabetically
Right To Know Station: a binder that should have evacuation plan, location of gas and water valves, fire extinguishers, first aid kits; emergency numbers for fire/rescue, heating, air, etc.; YOUR responsibility to read/understand manual
Office Equipment and Maintenance: daily/weekly cleaning/calibration routine, replacing paper and ink, learning to operate machinery properly, learn to identify issues
DEA: Drug Enforcement Administration; regulates distribution and use of controlled substances, substances should be locked up until use, have a detailed log book (should be maintained for 5 years)
Inventory: everyone is responsible for inventory and should report low stock or shortage
Rotating Inventory: oldest items should be placed at the front to make sure they are used before their expiration date
USDA: US Department of Agriculture; prevention and eradication of animal diseases, import/export of animals/products, inspection of kennels/horse shows/research facilities, food safety inspection of meat and poultry
NYS Ag and Markets: enforces laws on food safety, animal and plant health; division of animal industry detects, controls, eradicates disease in food/fiber animals
NYS Ag and Markets is responsible for: dog licensing/control laws, NYS Fair Health Checks, blood testing of pull horses, make and enforce NYS laws on animal issues
