How do we reduce risk in the Clinic? Keeping a clean, sanitized, or sterile environment is essential in the veterinary clinic and especially in surgery.
What methods are there to reduce risk cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting
What does cleaning do  removes most germs, dirt, and impurities from surfaces. Clean with water, soap, and scrubbing
What does sanitizing do reduces germs to levels public health codes or regulations consider safe. Sanitizing is done with weaker bleach solutions or sanitizing sprays. Clean surfaces before you sanitize them.
What does disinfecting do kills most germs on surfaces and objects. Disinfecting is done with stronger chemicals. Clean surfaces before you disinfect them
What are the common chemicals iodine, chlorhexidine, alcohols, quaternary ammonias, chlorine, and aldehydes
What is iodine A common antiseptic (often yellow!)

What are quaternary ammonias Lots of our commonly used disinfection products are these

What is an aldehyde Formaldehyde is a commonly used one
These range on effectiveness as to what they kill: Bacteria, viruses, fungal spores

What is Sterilization Describes a process that destroys or eliminates all forms of microbial life and is carried out in health-care facilities by physical or chemical methods.
When is sterilization necessary This is necessary for all surgical areas and equipment as infection risk is greatest
