Optimizing the image

| Motion | Unwanted movement or restlessness of the patient during an x-ray exposure. |
| Blur | Results from patient motion. |
| Distortion | Foreshortening or elongation due to angulation of the body, cassette, or the tube. |
| Magnification | An equal/even distortion of an entire body part. |
| Parallel Grid | Absorbs the radiation at the edges of the image. |
| Focused Grid | Allows the X-rays to pass through, even at the edge of the image. |
| Illuminators | Transmits light evenly throughout the image on film. |
| Filtration | A mirror inside the collimator attenuates the x-ray beam. |
