Soils, Fertility, and Plant Growth

QuestionAnswer
What are the soil particles that make up soil texture? Sand, silt, and clay
What is the largest soil particle? And the smallest? Sand; Clay
Is a loam soil high or low in clay relative to the other particles? Low
How do you determine soil texture using a soil bottle? The layers of different sized particles settle
What makes up the glue that holds the soil particles into aggregates? Humus
Why is gas exchange in soils important for plant growth? Root cells are growing which means they require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide as waste. Oxygen needs to be available in the root zone and carbon dioxide needs to be vented
Why add organic matter to the soil? Helps build aggregates by gently sticking soil particles together; adds nitrogen; improves soil structure; holds water and nutrients
Is all organic matter pretty much the same value when added to soil or are some types of organic matter better than others? Compost: builds soil structure, retains water and nutrients, not effective as a nutrient source Green manure: suppresses weeds, reduces soil-borne pathogens Incorporating crop residue: no till minimizes soil erosion
Soil texture refers to the proportion of which 3 particles in the soil? Clay, Sand, Silt
Select the 3 elements that are prominently listed on a fertilizer bag Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium
Organic material or matter is: partially decomposed plant material
Green manure is: tilling a crop into the soil to increase the organic matter.
Potting mix can be generally characterized as having: good aeration, good drainage, and low fertility.
In the context of soil, the term “mineral” refers to: clay, sand, and silt.
Soils with a high content of sand are characterized as having: good aeration, good drainage, and poor moisture holding capacity
Soil is not used for plants grown in containers because it: compacts tightly and has poor drainage.
Adding too much organic matter into soil may reduce soil Nitrogen
Humus is: produced by soil organisms, aggregates soil particles, and holds nutrients
Soil texture refers to: the relative proportion of sand, silt, and clay particles in the soil.
The key element that is found in protein is Nitrogen
An organic molecule is a compound associated with living organisms that contains: Carbon atoms
Soils classified as loam have: small amounts of clay
What can a gardener do to improve soil structure? Increase soil organic matter.
Soil nutrients are lost by: volatilization, runoff, and harvest.
