Equine Terms in Veterinary Terminology

TermDefinition
Chestnut Waxy growth on the inside of a horse's legs.
Colic Abdominal pain.
Conformation Body form and condition.
Cribber A horse that chews on wood or plastic objects.
Cross Tying Method of using two ropes to secure a horse so that the head is level.
Cryptorchid (Ridgeling) A stallion with one or both testicles retained in the abdomen.
Dam Female parent of a horse.
Drench To administer liquid orally using a drenching bottle or large dosing syringe.
Farrier (Blacksmith) A person who cares for a horse's feet.
Floating Procedure carried out by a vet to file down the points on a horse's molars and premolars.
Galvayne's Groove Mark on the labial surface (surface facing the tooth) of a horse's tooth. Used to determine a horse's age. Usually appears around eleven years.
Hand Unit of measurement (4 inches) to measure a horse from withers down.
Heavy/Draft Horse Equine standing over 17 hands and weighing 1400lbs or more.
Hobble Type of restraint in which either the front feet or hind feet are placed in straps to keep them from moving.
January 1st The date used by many equine breeders as a common age determinant.
Light Horse Equine standing between 14.2-17.2 hands and weighing 900-1400lbs.
Nearside Left side of the horse.
Offside Right side of the horse.
Proudflesh A raised lump (beyond the wound surface) of granulation tissue that is excessive.
Sire Male parent of a horse.
Sound A horse that is 'sound of limb and wind' is one that does not exhibit any signs or symptoms of lameness or respiratory problems.
Twitch Mode of restraint in which a device is twisted on the upper lip or muzzle.
Whorls Changes in hair pattern.
Windsucker A cribber horse that while chewing sucks air into their stomach.
Winking Opening of the labia to expose the clitoris while the female horse assumes a mating position.
