Physical Examination

QuestionAnswer
Subjective The evaluator's opinion of the behavior or mental state of the pet and the physical signs of the disposition of the animal.
Objective Typically summarizes measurable data. Split into two categories: Tenets of stability and systems
Assessment Performed by veterinarian, should directly link to observations noted on the physical exam
Plan Produced by veterinarian, prognosis is also noted that outlines the overall prognosis for the pet given the info available.
Signalment Includes the pet's breed, sex, age, reproductive status
Hyperthermia Temperature above 102.5 F usually due to secondary infection, inflammation or neoplasia
Heat Stroke Temp >105 F, can cause damage to organs, CNS, and blood supply
Hypothermia Temperature below 99.5 F in dogs and 100.5 F in cats
Pulse deficit When there is not 1 pulse for every beat of the heart
Paradoxical pulse Change in pulse strength from strong to weak as animal breaths in and out
Sinus rhythm "regular" rhythm, steady beats
Sinus arrhythmia "regularly irregular"; gaps between beats vary slightly
Dysrhythmia "irregularly irregular"; gaps between beats vary a great deal
Murmur Alteration in the normal heart sounds
Rales A.K.A Crackles, sounds like bubble packing material when it is "popped"
Ronchi A.K.A Wheezes/rasps, produced by the passage of air through a constricted airway
Stertor Lower pitched wheeze/rasps (someone snoring)
Stridor High pitched wheeze/rasps (whistle)
Plural Friction Ribs Sounds like squeaks Produced because thin lining of chest cavity and external surfaces of the lungs have become inflamed and lost slippery surface-advanced lung
Dehydration Measurement of how severely a pet is fluid compromised
Submandibular Lymph node located in ventral aspect of neck near the angle of the jaw
Prescapular Lymph node located just cranial and dorsal to the shoulder joint
Popliteal located in the fat pad just caudal to the stifle joint
