Cestodes Tapeworms
Proglottid Individual boxlike components of the tapeworm strobila; three types are immature, mature, and gravid proglottids
Scolex The "head" of a tapeworm
Acetabulum One of four suckers on the anterior end of a true tapeworm; used to hold onto the lining of the small intestine
Tegument Body wall of a helminth
Rostellum Holdfast organ on the anterior end of an armed trip tapeworm; has backward-facing hooks used to anchor the tapeworm to the wall of the host's gut
Armed Tapeworm True tapeworm that possesses a rostellum on its anterior end
Unarmed Tapeworm True tapeworm that lacks a rostellum on its anterior end
Strobila Body of the tapeworm composed of individual proglottids (immature, mature, and gravid)
Hermaphroditic Having complete sets of both male and female reproductive organs
Hexacanth Embryos Type of tapeworm egg containing a six-toothed embryo (an embryo that contains six hooklets)
Metacestode Larval tapeworm found within the intermediate host; types include cysticercoid, cysticercus, coenurus, hydatid, tetrathyridium, procercoid, plerocercoid, and sparganum
Bothria Two slitlike holdfast organs on the anterior end of a pseudotapeworm
Coracidium Ciliated hexacanth embryo unique to the pseudotapeworms
Copepod An aquatic crustacean
Procercoid Type of metacestode stage unique to the pseudotapeworms; found within the first intermediate host, usually a tiny aquatic crustacean
Plerocercoid Type of metacestode stage unique to the pseudotapeworms; the stage where the pseudotapeworm becomes infective for the definitive host and is found within a second intermediate host (usually a fish)
Psocids Primitive insects often associated with vegetation
Lappets Round protuberances behind the suckers of the scolex in Anoplocephala perfoliata
Embryophore Tapeworm hexacanth embryo with striated eggshell
Oncosphere Growth ball released by the ingested egg of Echinococcus species
Strobilocercus Type of metacestode stage found in the liver of rats; has a scolex that attaches to a long neck, which connects to a fluid-filled bladder
Coracidium Ciliated hexacanth embryo unique to the pseudotapeworm (cotyledons); when ingested by the first intermediate host (an aquatic crustacean), forms a procercoid within the intermediate host
