Immunity and Infectious Diseases
Term | Definition |
---|---|
The Immune System | protects against microbes/pathogens such as: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, helminths (worms). |
1st Defense | physical barriers-skin, normal flora (skin and intestines), self-cleaning processes (coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea). |
2nd Defense | "innate immunity," this terminates infections quickly before the onset of disease, it's an immediate response and causes inflammation. |
3rd Defense | "acquired immunity," a system that recognizes and remembers invaders. Is a complex and sophisticated system. |
Outside Microbial Invaders | originate outside of the body (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, helminths). |
Body Microbial Invaders | originate or live in the body's own cells (viruses, intracellular bacteria, intracellular protozoa). |
Humoral Response | develops antibodies against an antigen. Antibodies are specific to only one antigen. They're produced by B-cell lymphocytes. |
T-cell Lymphocytes | recognize and destroy abnormal/foreign cells. This is why tissue grafts are rejected. |
Active Immunity | occurs when the immune system produces antibodies to antigens either by natural exposure or vaccines. |
Passive Immunity | the immunity your body has from a non-self source (in utero, colostrum, intravenous plasma transfusion, etc.) |
Colostrum | gives passive immunity to baby animals that can last 6-8 weeks. |
Core Vaccines | -DAPP, Rabies, FVRCP |
Noncore Vaccines | -lepto, bord, FeLV, etc. |
Rabies | a zoonotic viral disease, spreads via saliva in bite wounds and contact with central nervous tissue. |
Rabies Symptoms | -behavior changes, ataxia/incoordination, paralysis |
Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis | herpes virus in cats- causes upper respiratory infection (URI). Is included in the FVRCP vacc. |
Calicivirus | many strains of this virus causes URI, may also cause oral ulceration. Is included in the FVRCP vacc. |
Feline Panleukopenia | parvovirus in cats, part of the FVRCP vacc. Will show low white blood cell count. |
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) | this virus sheds in saliva and nasal secretions through mutual grooming, fomites, spitting, and biting. Causes immunosuppression +/- lymphoma. |
DA2PP/DHPP | this vaccine contains canine distemper virus, adenovirus Type-2/Hepatitis, canine parvovirus, canine parainfluenza virus. |
Canine Distemper Virus | causes neurological issues, nasal planum, and foot pad disease. |
Adenovirus Type-2 / Hepatitus | type 1 causes hepatitis and type 2 causes infection tracheobronchitis. Typically used interchangeably |
Canine Parvovirus | highly contagious GI disease spread in feces. More common in puppies. |
Canine Parainfluenza Virus | causes canine infectious tracheobronchitis, can also be combined in intranasal bord vacc. |
Leptospirosis | noncore vaccine but is endemic to our area, caused by the bacteria Leptospira, is zoonotic. |
Endemic | (of a disease or condition) regularly found among particular people or in a certain area. |
Bordetella bronchiseptica | primary cause of infectious tracheobronchitis (kennel cough). Causes a dry honking cough, is highly contagious, and required for boarding/grooming. |
H3N8 | equine flu |
H3N2 | avian flu |
Canine Influenza | upper respiratory disease in canines, can possibly lead to pneumonia. |
Vaccine Hypersensitivity | this is treated with an injectable antihistamine or injectable steroid. |
Vaccine-Induced Sarcoma | a type of cancer that forms at the site of injection, is aggressive and requires amputation. Prevent this by injecting as distal as possible. |
