Pelvic Limb lower

Muscles of the pelvic limb - crus and pes

QuestionAnswer
Cranial tibial ORIGIN - lateral tibial tuberosity INSERTION - plantar surface metacarpal II/I tarsal bone ACTION - flexion of tarsus, supinate paw POSITION - superficial flat muscle on cranial surface of tibia
Long digital extensor ORIGIN - extensor fossa on lateral condyle of femur INSERTIONS - dorsal distal phalanx - ungual crest digits II-V ACTION - extension of digits, flexion of tarsus POSITIONS - deep to cranial tibial, tendon crosses tibiofemoral joint
Fibularis (peroneus) longus ORIGIN - lateral tibial condyle & head of fibula INSERTION - 4th tarsal bone & plantar base of all metatarsals ACTION - medial rotation (pronation), flexion of tarsus POSITION - lateral surface of crus between cranial tibialis and deep lateral dig flex
Fibularis (peroneus) brevis ORIGIN - lateral surface distal two thirds of fibula and tibia INSERTION - base metatarsal V ACTION - flexion of tarsus
Gastrocnemius (and tendon) ORIGIN - lateral head = lateral supracondylar tuberosity (via lateral fabella), medial head = medial supracondylar tuberosity (via medial fabella) INSERTION - calcaneous tuberosity ACTION - extend of tarsus, slight flexion of stifle
Gastrocnemius - POSITION (wouldn't fit on other one) POSITION - caudal superficial muscle, covered distally by biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus and gracilis
Superficial digital flexor (and tendon) ORIGIN - lateral head of gastrocnemius, lateral supracondylar tuberosity INSERTION - calceneus tarsus and base of proximal phalanxes ACTION - flexion of digits, extension and fixing of tarsus, slight flexion of stifle
Superficial digital flexor - POSITION (wouldn't fit on other one) POSITION - lies deep to gastrocnemius, superior to deep digital flexor
Deep digital flexor - medial head ORIGIN - caudal aspect proximal tibia INSERTION - distal phalanges - note each head has a separate tendon which join together at level of talus ACTION - extension of tarsus, flexion of digits POSITION - deep to gastrocnemius and superficial dig flex
Deep digital flexor - lateral head ORIGIN - caudal proximal fibula and caudolateral tibia INSERTION - distal phalanges see note on medial head card ACTION - extension of tarsus, flexion of digits POSITION - deep to gastrocnemius and superficial dig flex
Caudal tibial (reduced in dogs) ORIGIN - medial proximal fibula INSERTION - medial ligamentous tissue of tarsus ACTION - extension of tarsus, pronation of pes POSITION - completely covered by deep dig flex, has very small, long tendon which runs with tendon of medial head of deep DF
Popliteus ORIGIN - caudal aspect lateral femoral condyle INSERTION - proximal third of tibia ACTION - medial rotation of crus relative to femur, may flex stifle FORM - short, triangular
