Pelvic Limb upper

Muscles of the pelvic limb - thigh and rump

QuestionAnswer
Biceps femoris ORIGIN - ischial tuberosity, sacrotuberous ligament INSERTION - patella and patella ligament, large fascial attachment to cranial tibial ACTION - extension of hip, flexion of stifle POSITION - lateral thigh, superficial m.
Semitendinosus ORIGIN - ischial tuberosity INSERTION - medial proximal tibia ACTION - extension of hip, flexion of knee POSITION - lies between biceps femoris and semimembranosis
Semimembranosus ORIGIN - ischial tuberosity INSERTIONS (2 bellies)- cranial belly = medial condyle of femur, caudal belly = medial collateral ligament, medial condyle of tibia ACTION - extension of hip, caudal head can flex stifle
Adductor magnus et brevis ORIGIN - pelvic symphysis INSERTION - whole length lateral surface femur ACTION - adduction and extension of hip joint POSITION - deep to semimembranosus and gracilis
Quadratus femoris ORIGIN - ventral ischium INSERTION - inter-trochantic crest ACTION- extension and lateral rotation of hip FORM - small square looking m. POSITION - superior to adductor magnus et brevis
Gluteus superficialis ORIGIN - tuber sacrale of ilium, sacrotuberous ligament INSERTION - 3rd trochanter ACTION - extension of hip FORM - small, flat, rectangular POSITION - most superficial gluteal
Tensor fasciae latae ORIGIN - superficially = aponeurosis m. gluteus medius, deeply = tuber coxae INSERTION = lateral femoral fascial insertion ACTION = flexion of hip, abduct limb, extension of stifle FORM - triangular m. 2 portions
Tensor fascia latae - POSITION (wouldn't fit on other one) POSITION- lies between sartorius, gluteus medius and quadriceps femoris
Gluteus medius ORIGIN - ilium and iliac crest INSERTION - greater trochanter ACTION - extension and medial rotation of hip POSITION - lies in the wing of the ilium
Gluteus profundus ORIGIN - lateral body of ilium INSERTION - greater trochanter ACTION - extension and medial rotation of hip, some abduction FORM - broad fan shape POSITION - deepest gluteal, deep to gluteus medius nad piriformis
Piriformis ORIGIN - lateral surface 3rd sacral and 1st caudal vert INSERTION - greater trochanter ACTION - extension of hip POSITION - caudal and medial to gluteus medius, deep to gluteus superficialis
Internal obturator (tendon and muscle belly) ORIGIN - rami of pubis and ischium INSERTION - triple tendon apparatus (gemelli, internal and external obturator): trochanteric fossa ACTION - lateral rotation of hip FORM - fan shape POSITION - covers obturator foramen
Gemelli ORIGIN - lateral body of ischium INSERTION - trochanteric fossa ACTION - lateral rotation of hip POSITION - lies beneath tendon of external obturator
Sartorius (2 bellies) ORIGIN - cranial = iliac crest, caudal = tuber coxae of ilium INSERTION - cranial = tendon of rectus femoris, caudal = cranial border of tibia ACTION - flexion of hip, extension of stifle FORM - flat, straplike POSITION - superficial to quads
Gracillis ORIGIN - pelvic symphysis INSERTION - cranial proximal tibia, large fascial insertion down to tarsus : calcaneal tendon ACTION - adduction of limb, extension of hip and hock, flexion of stifle POSITION - craniomedial aspect of thigh
Pectineus ORIGIN - iliopubic eminence, prepubic tendon INSERTION - distal end caudal medial femur ACTION - adduction of thigh POSITION - deep m. closely attached to adductor magnus et bravis caudally (medial aspect of thigh)
Iliopsoas : mm. psoas major and iliacus ORIGIN - transverse processes lumbar vert 2-7 INSERTION - lesser trochanter ACTION - flexion of hip, flexion of vertebral column
External obturator ORIGIN - ventral surface of pubis and ischium INSERTION - triple tendon apparatus : trochant eric fossa ACTION - lateral rotation of hip POSITION - covers obturator foramen externally
Quadriceps femoris - rectus femoris ORIGIN - body of ilium, cranial to acetabulum : crosses 2 joints INSERTION - tibial tuberosity via patella ACTION - flexion of hip, extension of stifle POSITION - cranial portion of quadriceps
Quadriceps femoris - position of entire muscle, action POSITION - covers femur cranially, laterally and medially ACTION - flexion of hip, extension of stifle
Quadriceps femoris - vastus lateralis ORIGIN - proximal craniolateral femur INSERTION - tibial tuberosity via patella ACTION - extension of stifle POSITION - lateral portion of quadriceps
Quadriceps femoris - vastus medialis ORIGIN - proximal craniomedial femur INSERTION - tibial tuberosity via patella ACTION - extension of stifle POSITION - medial portion of quadriceps
Quadriceps femoris - vastus intermedius ORIGIN - proximal craniolateral femur with vasti lateralis INSERTION - tibial tuberosity via patella ACTION - extension of stifle POSITION - deepest portion of quadriceps, lies directly on femur
