Anatomical terms

General terms that appear often in anatomy

Fossa A depression or hollow in a bone
Notch A depression in a bone which often provides stabilisation to an adjacent articulating bone
Tubercle A small, rounded part of a bone
Process A projection/outgrowth of tissue from a larger body
Condyle A round prominence at the end of a bone - most often part of a joint
Cutaneous Relating to the skin
Brachi The upper arm
Cephalic Relating to the head
Cleido Relating to the clavicle
Cervical Relating to the cervical vertebrae (neck)
Omo Relating to the scapular
Profundus Deep (think 'profound')
Nuchal Relating to the nape of the neck
Rami / ramus A branch or elongated process
Brevis Short
