| DLH | domestic long hair |
| DMH | domestic medium hair |
| DSH | domestic short hair |
| Orchidectomy | (or castration) removal of testicles to prevent reproduction |
| Tail Docking | cosmetic surgery to shorten the length of the tail |
| Onychectomy | (or declaw surgery) removal of claws |
| Dystocia | difficult birth |
| Polyestrous | multiple heat cycles during the season |
| Canine (K-9) | dog |
| Bitch | female dog |
| Stud | male dog of breeding age |
| Intact | capable of breeding; still has reproductive organs |
| Neuter | surgical removal of reproductive organs |
| Spay | surgical removal of reproductive organs in female |
| Castration | surgical removal of reproductive organs in male |
| Litter | group of young dogs from the same parents |

| Whelping | labor process of female dog |
| Taurine | nutrient required by cats for allowing proper development |
